I’ve had a completed roll of film sitting in my cabinet for over a year now. I kept telling myself that I’d develop it once I finished a second roll, so I could develop two at once, but I still haven’t finished a second roll, so when I noticed that sad little completed roll sitting in my cabinet a few weeks ago I decided to do something about it. I sent it off to the lab and just got the scans back.
Looking through the photos reminded me of why I love film so much, I’d completely forgotten some of the memories that I captured during that time period and many of the photos made me smile. It’s even inspired me to finish the roll that’s currently in my camera… But who knows how long it’ll take me to get that one developed.
Here are a few outtakes from the roll:
I started taking photos on this roll when I still lived in my old apartment building in 2023. The apartment was relatively cheap and had the loudest and least effective heating system that I’ve ever heard in my life. Every half hour in the winter, the apartment sounded like an airplane taking off. Still, I loved that apartment, even with the one square foot of counter space in the kitchen and the random holes in the walls and questionable locks on the doors.

During the spring of 2023, I fostered two different puppies from the local animal shelter. They were both a handful: Russell wanted to chew on everything and had more energy than I could handle, while Fang was still learning the concept of peeing outside. I remember getting pretty emotional when I had to bring Russell back to the shelter, and even more when I dropped Fang off. I’ve stopped fostering since then since it was too emotionally taxing… Now I just take shelter dogs for walks every so often.

The roll also had photos from a wonderful day that John and I spent on the Blue Ridge Parkway. We got on in Floyd, VA, after stopping at Red Rooster—our favorite coffee shop in the area—and we then we drove all the way from Floyd to Roanoke with frequent stops for scenic viewpoints. It was lovely, and looking back at the photos makes me want to recreate that day.

I also had a few photos from a wonderful summer day of blueberry picking at a local farm with some friends. Hopefully I’ll do some more berry picking this summer!

My last photos on the roll were from the first few weeks that John and I spent in our house together. We (well, mostly John) repainted our living room, bought a new plant, and got used to new spaces and routines. We still live in the house now and some of these old photos have inspired me to remember to appreciate it more and to continue to capture it on film.
Will I actually finish that second roll of film? Yes, eventually… Although I’ve been enjoying my digital camera a lot lately. If you’re lucky, I’ll make a follow-up post to this with that second roll within the year :)
That’s all for now, friends. I’m boarding a flight to Boston in an hour and am looking forward to being back in the northeast for a week. Talk soon!
these are so ambient, I love them! can’t wait to get my first roll of film back once it’s finished <3 i’m curious, what brand of film do you use?
